some women behind me in a que yesterday…

skafunkle:

they were going on and on about how someone they know is a feminist. but how, they claimed, she couldn’t be because she “wears nice clothes” and how you “can’t be a feminist and care about the way you look”.
why the fuck not?
i put effort into how i look. it’s not for men- it’s not for my boyfriend, it’s not for my fellow male students. it’s fun. i’m aware, i’m not taken in by all the shit advertising that tries to make me hate myself. if i want to wear high heels- i’ll fucking do it. it’s the same as if i wanna wear baggy jeans and no make-up, i’ll fucking do it. the way we dress is empowering.
the stereotyping of what it is to be feminist isn’t helping anyone.
it’s about equal rights. not rebelling for the sake of it. feminism isn’t a fucking “fashion statement.”
we’ve come so far, girls. let’s not get bogged down now by stereotypes that hinder. stereotypes that make women ashamed to say they’re a feminist because it’s associated with “dykes” in dungarees.

i’m proud to say that i’m a feminist and i wear lipstick.
how about you?

I feel like a lot of people that aren’t familiar with feminism think that all feminists are lesbians that hate men and don’t shave. Feminism is about equality — that’s it. And feminists do not hate men. After all, the patriarchy we are fighting against hurts men too, and many men are feminists! Feminism doesn’t have anything to do with style or sexuality.

As they said ^ it’s all about empowerment. Do you want to shave? Then shave. Do you not want to shave? Then don’t. Do you want to wear makeup and high heels? Then by all means, go for it! But don’t if you don’t want to. The whole point is not being put into a box based on social norms society has thrown at us because we are female. And also if you are male, it’s the same thing.

I for one love clothes. I like wearing dresses and buying nice shoes. I wear makeup. I also shave. And that doesn’t make me any less of a feminist.

lot of people that aren’t familiar with feminism think that...feminists are lesbians
  4. sarahknitsstuff answered: same here I love my lipstick, and I’m a strong feminist the two things aren’t mutually exclusive
  5. littleitems answered: totally! we can enjoy something and still be critical of it. if we couldn’t…well we’d have to just off ourselves; oppression is everywhere.
  6. readreadrose answered: no make-up, on account I think my face is good enough for anyone including myself, but I get dressed to feel awake or professional.
  7. kwhynot answered: Lol of course a feminist has to be ugly. How else do we uphold the stereotype of feminist being sexually frustrated women?
